As seasoned traveler Janie Heinrich says, “My service dog is an extension of me; I am not an extension of them, and I plan my outings by my desires, which always unfold into great, healthy, and safe adventures for my service dog.” Using her well-honed advice below, you too can enjoy vacationing with your service dog in new and exciting locations!

Accommodations

Service dogs are not pets; they are highly trained to assist individuals with disabilities and are recognized as legal medical devices in the States. Fortunately, the hospitality industry has become increasingly aware and accommodating of the service dog team and welcomes these extraordinary canine companions and their handlers.
For accommodations while vacationing, Janie explains, “We register and ask if the hotel is handicap-accessible and state we will bring a Working Service Dog or a Trained Service Dog. My Service Dogs Phoebe and Beckett have stayed with me at some of the finest hotels in the country without incident because they both were, at the time, my working service dog.”
Transportation
Navigating airports, train stations, and public transportation with a service dog requires coordination and awareness. Familiarize yourself with the regulations of your chosen mode of transportation and inform them in advance, whenever possible, about the service dog's presence. Most transportation providers have specific guidelines to ensure a smooth and comfortable journey for the service dog team and the public.
Exploration

Service dogs are trained to remain focused on their handlers, regardless of the distractions around them. This level of discipline allows for a seamless and enjoyable exploration of tourist attractions, parks, and cultural sites.
Here’s how Janie handles her vacation planning: “We plan our trip and state, "I travel with a working service dog," and make sure that the museum, gardens or restaurant are all handicap-accessible with proper ramping to accommodate my needs, not my service dog's needs. Having a nearby park or area to do their business is all we need. “Pet-friendly locations” typically mean unruly dogs that come and get in your service dog's face, creating dangerous situations when their pet parents are not engaged."
Restaurants
Dining out during a vacation are must-have experiences and ones Janie fully enjoys with Beckett her Service Dog. “I go to 5-star Michelin-rated restaurants and plentiful eateries in the USA, Canada, and Mexico; they always accommodate me with my SD Beckett sitting politely under the table indoors and outdoors, depending on where I want to sit. SD Phoebe and I traveled to Europe, eating and visiting all my chosen sites, and everyone was terrific.”
Public Perception

Finally, it’s also important to be aware of the public's perception and understanding of service dogs. While the majority of people are respectful and appreciative of these working animals, some may not fully comprehend their role. Service dog handlers may encounter curious stares, questions, or even unwarranted skepticism. This serves as an opportunity to educate others about the significance of service dogs and the rights of their handlers granted by the ADA.
Vacationing with a service dog is a unique journey that requires planning, communication, patience, and a sense of adventure to keep it stress-free! The bond between a service dog and its handler is powerful, making every moment of exploration, relaxation, and discovery even more meaningful. While there may be challenges along the way, the rewards far outweigh them. Ultimately, traveling with a service dog transforms a vacation into an extraordinary adventure, where companionship, independence, and the joy of discovery intertwine to create lasting memories.
